GREEK ISO-8859-7 POSTSCRIPT TYPE 1 FONTS
			   GREEK POLYTONIKO PS FONTS

1. GENERAL
---------

This is a rather complete set of Greek Postscript Type 1 (scalable)
fonts. Their creation was assisted by various font and information
resources available on the Internet. Font design software was used to
fine tune some aspects of their encoding and design. The fonts are
encoded in the ELOT-928 (ISO-8859-7) encoding standard. .AFM (font
metric) files are also provided. 16 ELOT-928 fonts are provided:

>>> GreekArial (Helvetica) set (Plain, Italic, Bold, BoldItalic):
grkarip.pfb
grkarib.pfb
grkarii.pfb
grkaribi.pfb

>>> GreekCourier set (Plain, Italic, Bold, BoldItalic):
grkcurp.pfb
grkcurb.pfb
grkcuri.pfb
grkcurbi.pfb

>>> GreekTimes set (Plain, Italic, Bold, BoldItalic):
grktimp.pfb
grktimi.pfb
grktimb.pfb
grktimbi.pfb

An extra POLYTONIKO set was added. I am not sure what encoding standard
it uses. But I think there is no definitive standard here. I am not
sure about its licensing status but I include it here until someone
complains (if they do).
I made some amendments to it and added an Italic font. We still need a Bold
and BoldItalic version of this to consider it complete. This set
contains the the Plain,Italic forms: grkpolp.pfb grkpoli.pfb

The polytoniko fonts are included to facilitate the previewing and
printing of Ancient Greek texts.

2. HOW TO INSTALL
-----------------

Just type make after you set FDIR to the destination directory for these
fonts.

3. HOW TO USE THEM
------------------

Postscript Type 1 fonts can be use in _many_ different ways. These fonts
are *scalable* ie they should print/look good in almost *any* resolution.
Some of the possible uses:

1) They can be used for printing Postscript files containing greek
ELOT-928 text (and polytoniko for the case of the last set). Download
them to your PS printer and have any text which contains greek
characters to print. Or attach them to any PS file so that printing
can work on any PS printer.

2) They can be used for previewing PS files containing greek characters.
ghostscript is a freely available PS previewer. It can also be used to
print Postscript files in most non-PS printers. File
Fontmap.ghostscript is what you have to include in your ghostscript's
   lib Fontmap file.

3) They can be used with X Windows. X11R5 and later include a basic
Type 1 rasteriser. So you can use these fonts in many of your X
applications. A very interesting example is Netscape. The script
install_fonts is provided to register your fonts with your
X server (many other options exist for installation - read your X
documentation). And a grnetscape mini script shows you an example
of how to use it with netscape 1.2. Version 2.0+ has changed the
way fonts are declared to the program. An example of how to use these
   fonts with these is provided.

A significant advantage of using these fonts for X apps like netscape
is that they will look much better in large sizes and will also
be able to *print* exactly the same as they look. Also you save space.
You need only one file for all possible character sizes.

The only problem is that since the X11 Type 1 rasteriser is basic you
do not get very good screen results especially on low character sizes
   and dpi.

4) They can be used with Adobe Type Manager (TM) under Windows or any
Operating System that can use PS fonts. Some OSes may need these to
be converted. Consult your OS's technical documentation.

5) Type 3 (.pfa) fonts can easily be produced using the utility
pfb2pfa (use your archie to find it).
